History

Family Guided Routines Based Intervention (FGRBI) is an approach for providing early intervention services within the child and family’s natural environments consistent with the legal mandates for Part C of IDEA (1997, 2004) and DEC recommended practices (DEC, 2015) .  FGRBI traces its roots to activity-based intervention (ABI) (Bricker & Cripe, 1992), a child-directed approach to embedding naturalistic intervention strategies in play, daily routines, and planned activities for young children with special needs.  Over time, FGRBI has evolved to focus on parent-implemented interventions with children ages birth to three and their caregivers receiving early intervention services and supports.  Coaching has been added to facilitate the shift from provider interactions with the child to focus on the triadic nature of the provider supporting the parent and child interactions and embedded intervention in addition to the original ABI supporting classroom-based interventions.
